Grabbys ^[1]

Grabbys are the oldest specifically gay adult entertainment awards. Begun in 1991 in a humorous vein, Grabbys soon adopted categories similar to mainstream media awards, but were announced in only print until 1999 when the 1998 awards were presented in a show. The show has grown into a circuit-like event with opening and after events as well as the presentation show.

The Grabbys are the only awards that are truly independent of the industry. Even from their inception as something of a joke, Grabbys were gay awards for productions made for and marketed to gay audiences.

Grabby records on the web are a mess, even from official sources. For much of their history, of course, they would not have been entered on the web when nominees and awards were announced. Since then it appears that web page templates have been recycled without preserving archives of the previous pages. Categories have been dropped and added intentionally, but in other cases it is not clear that variations in the names of categories were anything but clerical shortcuts. The officiating organization has changed and so has the relationship of the date of the awards to the timeframe of releases considered for the awards. Recipients have often forgot the year in which the awards were made and tend to remember the date of the production was released, and so forth. Just as with mainstream awards, the Grabby awards shows often omit some categories that a less interesting to everyone except the nominees. In some cases the official announcement of nominations from the official source was in (obvious) error, but the error has been slavishly copied by reporters. And this is to say nothing of the many variations in the spelling or styling of titles and performer and studio names.

In sum: there is no authoritative list of all the Grabby nominees and winners.
