The principal COLT Studio Group video labels are Colt Studio (usually just called Colt here and in my blog to avoid confusion with the group), very muscular mature models in macho trappings, Buckshot Productions, younger models of the COLT type, and Olympus, European models and production. There are several standing titles such as the Colt Minute Man series (solos). COLT also has a number of publication and merchandise lines.
COLT prefers the name in all uppercase, not strictly observed here for technical wiki reasons. The COLT brand and its image began in the late 1960s with (still) photographic offerings of photographer and artist Jim French (aka RipCOLT). As a previous trans-Atlantic effort had been named LUGER, it is a fair bet that COLT was originally named for the firearms company. Colt Firearms, however, is very litigious about their brand name (which is why the Houston Colt .45s baseball team is now the Astros) and for a time COLT used a young horse as a trademark. Now however the name alone in red gothic letters is widely recognized.
The COLT type was quickly established: mature, very muscular men in macho settings (leather, cowboy, boxer, motorcycle cop, and so forth). Although early on COLT produced 8mm loops, COLT calendars and large slick physique pictorials brought Colt to middle America. A COLT calendar was soon at the top of many gay men's holiday wish lists, and without frontal nudity, the calendars were widely available in newsstands and general bookstores, helping to imprint the COLT image on a generation of gay men. COLT-type models were more readily available in California, and eventually French and Colt moved to San Francisco .
In the early Naughties COLT was acquired by John Rutherford and his partner. Late in 2010 a reorganization effort was begun.
