The Purple Hand

Purple Hand symbol

In 1969 the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) and the Society for Individual Rights (SIR) demonstrated at the San Francisco Examiner against homophobic editorial policies. This became know as Bloody Friday of the Purple Hand because of the color of printer's ink dumped on the protesters. The ink was used by protesters to write gay liberation graffiti, and the Purple Hand was proposed as a gay symbol.
